What is an ECU? What is a remap?
Every modern engine is controlled by an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), a computer that manages fuelling, ignition timing, boost and dozens of other parameters in real time. Car manufacturers write that software with a huge amount of built-in tolerance, because a single engine has to work reliably in every market it's sold into.
That tolerance also has to cover the full range of ownership, from meticulously serviced vehicles to ones that see a lot of neglect. ECU remapping is the process of rewriting those factory settings to suit your engine and the way you actually drive it, rather than the lowest common denominator a manufacturer has to plan for.
Why every engine is tuned down from the factory
Manufacturers sell the same engine in several states of tune to cover different markets. Lower-output versions are built for regions with poorer fuel quality, stricter emissions rules, or where there's an incentive to down-tune a model. The ECU has to be prepared for that from the factory.
Higher-output versions of the same engine exist for markets with good fuel quality and drivers who want the performance the hardware is genuinely capable of. ECU remapping brings a vehicle up to that same standard by rewriting the software, not by changing the engine itself.
How the ECU remapping process works
